My Morning Jacket | Circuital
For whatever reason, I always thought My Morning Jacket was like some pop punk band. Or at the very least that sort of soft indie rock that makes girls go gaga (à la Death Cab For Cutie or something similar). I guess that’s why I never really bothered checking them out until their last album leaked like a month ago, because you know, I could always just listen to Death Cab For Cutie.
But it turns out I was really wrong. I guess they’re more in the whole indie folk range of bands, which isn’t much better considering the amount of generic, boring indie folk bands out there. Circuital isn’t bad though. I wouldn’t say it’s particularly memorable, but it definitely has its moments. Unfortunately, those moments are kind of a double-edged sword sometimes. For example, I really liked the title track, because it reminded me of the kind of jangly, upbeat songs written by old southern rock bands like The Allman Brothers. The problem is that I could kind of just listen to The Allman Brothers instead.
But it’s not like the album is full of those moments where I think of some other band instead of the artist at hand. When it happens it’s just like, “Huh. Well, okay.”
I enjoyed it, and I suppose I could see where the hubbub for this band would come from, but I guess it just doesn’t ring quite that clearly to me as it does for other people that really love this band. It’s decent, and I’ll listen to it a couple times again, probably, but far from my favorite release this year.

You guys don’t need this crap, but I’m going to give it to you anyway. I can tell - I don’t know any of you that well, but I can see it in your faces because some of you have faces that remind me of what my face looked like when I was younger. And I see some of you young people out there and I remember how hard it is to be young, and I remember how hard it is to be rejected the first time when you’re young. So what I want you to do is close your eyes - and I can see you, so don’t cheat me here - close those eyes of yours, put ‘em real tight. And I want you to imagine the first person that broke your heart; the first person that didn’t like you back; the first person that said shitty stuff about you; the first person that dumped you; the first person that changed their phone number because you called them sixty-two times in one day; the first person that didn’t know how good you were, and they missed you…they passed you by. And I want you to imagine that person and then I want you to sing at the top of your fucking lungs. I want you to sing, and I want to heal that with you right now.

Do what the fuck you want. Stand for what the fuck you believe in, and don’t let nobody tell you, you can’t do what the fuck you want. I’m a fuckin’ unicorn, and FUCK anyone who says I’m not.
